Unless the Scriptures are explained it is difficult to comprehend it. At the eunuch’s request Philip interpreted the Scriptures for him. Likewise Lord Jesus Christ appeared to the disciples who were on their way to Emmaus and explained the Scriptures for them. We should be able to walk with the risen Christ and interpret and understand the Scriptures. Jesus talks about the Scriptures. Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning him. At another time, he appeared to them and explained all that is written in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms and opened their minds so that they could understand the Scriptures (Luke 24: 44, 45). In today’s situation a rereading of the Scriptures has become a necessity. People who study research-reading suggests that seven things should take place while rereading. They are called Seven Rs in English and they are Read, Reread, Reflect, Relate, Refer, Reasoning and Record. This research is good while reading the Scriptures also. This will help in understanding the spirit behind through the letters stated because letters kill but the spirit livens. That is why it is said that when a text is read its context should also be read. As our unchanging, eternal Christ who is still alive speaks to us in various ways, it is important to reread the Scriptures according to today’s context to understand and recognize it.
1. Rereading of the Scriptures brings about a Transformation (2 Chronicles 34: 29- 33)
Josiah became the King of Judah when he was just eight years old. During the eighteenth year of his reign when repairs were being done in the Temple of God, the Book of the Law of the Lord was found. They gave it to the King and his secretary Shaphan read it to him. When he heard the words of the Law, he tore his robes. Eventually this became a reason for the whole kingdom to turn to God. What happened later is a transformation of the whole country. Reading and rereading of the Scriptures leads a society to transformation.
2. Rereading of the Scriptures gives a Vision of Christ (Luke 24: 13 – 27)
As mentioned earlier, when Cleopas and another person were travelling from Jerusalem to Emmaus, the risen Christ also joined them. Though they didn’t initially know it was Christ later they recognized him. Christ explained the Scriptures to them. As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he was going further, The request that they made then is noteworthy: “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over” (Luke 24: 29). The Lord went with them and opened their spiritual eyes. Rereading of the scriptures opens our spiritual eye and gives us a vision of Christ.
3. Rereading of the Scriptures gives a Resolute Faith (Acts 8: 26- 40)
The eunuch of the Ethiopian Queen came to Jerusalem to worship. While returning he was reading the book of the prophet Isaiah. Philip explained it to him and a transformation came upon the eunuch. The rereading of the Scriptures here transformed an individual and brought him to Christ.
