Women Partners in God’s Liberation Act

Ex. 1:15-22                   Ps. 148

Rom. 16:1-16               Mk. 15:37-41

Verse for meditation: “Some women were watching from a distance. Among them were Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. In Galilee these women had followed him and cared for his needs. Many other women who had come up with him to Jerusalem were also there” (Mk. 15:40, 41)

God in his liberation act has empowered women and used them without any discrimination. The Jew, the Greek, man, women, master and slave – all are equal in Christ Jesus (Gal. 3:28). A great number of women have followed Jesus to minister along with him (Lk. 8:1-13). In that team there were women like those who were healed, Mary the Magdalena, Johanna, the wife of Cusa who was the steward of Herod, Susana and others who gave away their belongings for the ministry. Jesus the Guru had accepted the ministry of all these people. Thus, women also have become partners in the preaching of Jesus regarding the Kingdom of God and its mission. A major share has been given to women in the Biblical spirituality during the time of male chauvinism. Women like Sara, Rebecca, Rachel, Debora, Ruth and Esther are some of the notable examples from the Old Testament.

1. Women in the Liberation Act: Shiphrah, Puah (Ex. 1:15-22)

God has used many women in his liberation act. Pharaoh has engaged some nurses to kill all the male children of the Israelites at birth itself (Ex. 1:15-22). But the nurses named Shiphrah and Puah feared God rather than the king and saved the children from infanticide. So the people of Israel has increased and strengthened (Ex. 1:20). They have not simply saved some children but they have protected the liberator himself (Moses). This incident has paved the way for not to begin a small liberation incident but to inaugurate and give precedence to the very liberation movement of the world itself. God’s saving of the Israelites from the expected destruction with the help of Esther, is to be remembered here (Es. 7:1-10).

2. Women in the Liberation Act: In the ministry of Paul (Rom. 16: 1-16)

Paul also appreciates the women who became partners in his ministry (Rom. 16:1-16). Prisca otherwise called Pricilla, Juniyas, Julia, Mary the sister of Nereus, Persis, the mother of Rufus, Euodia, Syntyche (Rom. 16:3,7,15; Phil. 4:2,3) and many others. When Paul is admonishing his spiritual son Timothy, he asks him to follow the faith which was in his mother (Unica) and his grandmother (Lois). Even today women are partners such as those who pray, help financially, help the preachers to do the ministry, those who preach and those who help their husbands in doing God’s work.

3. Women in the Liberation Act: Along with Jesus (Mk. 15:37-41).

There are very few men who stood along with Jesus to bear testimony to his death on the cross. But Mark, the evangelist records many women were present at the death of Jesus on the cross (Mk. 15:40-41). In the public ministry of Jesus also many were used for the spread of the kingdom of God. The resurrected Jesus has first given the command to preach about him to the women (Matt. 28:5-7). It is considered that sin has come into the world through a woman, Eve. But through a woman has came blessing also to the world, that is to say the final revelation of God, Jesus Christ was born to a woman. Due to the first sin, child bearing is given to women. It was recorded that the pain at the child birth as a disgrace from God (Gen. 3:16). But through the child bearing of another woman the whole world has been blessed. Mary sang when she realized that she is with a child because of the Holy Spirit: “… for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me holy is his name” (Lk. 1:48,49). Thus, a new change has been envisaged.

The Jews and Samaritans were enemies for a long time. At this point Jesus reaches Samaria and talks to the Samaritan lady. Her testimony is well known. John writes as follows: “Many of the Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the women’s testimony, ‘He told me everything I ever did’. So, when the Samaritans came to him, they urged him to stay with them, and he stayed two days. And because of his words many more became believers” (Jn. 4:39-41).
