Key Verse (Matthew 28:20):
“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
The Easter season steadily leads us from the empty tomb to the living experience of the risen Christ. It is not enough to proclaim, “Christ is risen”; we are called to live in the assurance that the risen Lord is with us. The resurrection is not merely a past event – it is a present reality. It brings with it a powerful promise: the abiding presence of Christ in our lives. Human life is filled with uncertainties. There are moments of fear, loneliness, and confusion. Even the disciples who walked with Jesus experienced doubt and hesitation after the resurrection. In such a context, the promise of Christ’s presence becomes the greatest source of strength and hope. The readings for today – Isaiah 41:8–13, Psalm 110, Hebrews 13:1–8, and Matthew 28:16–20 – collectively affirm that the risen Christ is not distant or absent. He is present, powerful, and faithful. His presence assures us, strengthens us, and sends us into the world with confidence. Let us reflect on this theme, “Risen Christ: Assurance of Everlasting Presence,” through four movements drawn from these Scriptures.
1. The Presence That Strengthens and Upholds (Isaiah 41:8–13)
In Isaiah, God speaks tenderly yet powerfully to His people: “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” This passage emerges in a context of fear and exile. The people of Israel felt abandoned and powerless. Yet God reassures them – not by removing all difficulties, but by promising His presence. The phrase “I am with you” is central. God does not say, “I will send help from afar,” but “I will be with you.” His presence becomes the foundation of courage. This assurance is fulfilled more deeply in Christ. The risen Lord carries forward the same promise. His presence is not limited by geography or time. He is Emmanuel – God with us – now and forever. In our own lives, we face many uncertainties – health concerns, responsibilities, challenges in ministry, and personal struggles. The promise of Christ’s presence does not mean we will never face difficulties, but it assures us that we are never alone. To walk in the assurance of the risen Christ is to reject fear and embrace faith. It is to hear God’s voice saying, “Do not be afraid; I will help you.”
2. The Presence of the Reigning Lord (Psalm 110)
Psalm 110 presents a majestic vision of the Lord who reigns in power: “The Lord says to my Lord: ‘Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.’” This Psalm points to the exaltation of Christ. The risen Lord is not merely present with us in a comforting sense; He is also the reigning King. He sits at the right hand of God, exercising authority over all creation. The presence of Christ is therefore not weak or passive. It is powerful and victorious. He is the Lord who has overcome sin, death, and evil. This truth gives us confidence. When we say Christ is with us, we are not speaking of a helpless companion, but of the victorious Lord who reigns over all circumstances. The disciples in Matthew 28 encounter this reality when Jesus declares, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” His presence is grounded in His authority. In a world that often seems chaotic and uncertain, this assurance is vital. The risen Christ is present with us, and He reigns over all. Nothing is beyond His control. To live in this assurance is to trust not only in His nearness but also in His sovereignty. It is to believe that the One who walks with us also rules over all things.
3. The Presence That Is Constant and Unchanging (Hebrews 13:1–8)
The Epistle to the Hebrews brings this theme into practical life. It calls believers to love, hospitality, faithfulness, and contentment, all rooted in the assurance of God’s presence. Verse 5 declares, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” This is one of the most powerful affirmations of God’s abiding presence. Human relationships can fail. Circumstances can change. But Christ’s presence remains constant. He does not abandon us in our weakness or forget us in our struggles. Verse 8 further emphasizes, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” The risen Christ is unchanging. His love, His promises, and His presence remain steadfast. This has deep implications for our daily living. Because Christ is always with us, we are called to live lives of love and faithfulness. His presence becomes the foundation of our ethics and relationships. When we face uncertainty, we can rely on His unchanging nature. When we feel alone, we can trust His abiding presence. When we are tempted to lose hope, we can hold on to His promises. To walk in the assurance of Christ’s presence is to live with confidence and stability, knowing that He is always with us and will never leave us.
4. The Presence That Commissions and Accompanies (Matthew 28:16–20)
The Gospel passage brings us to the Great Commission – a defining moment in the life of the Church. The disciples gather on the mountain, and the risen Christ gives them a mission: “Go and make disciples of all nations.” This mission is vast and demanding. It would be impossible without the assurance of Christ’s presence. That is why Jesus concludes with the promise: “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” This is not merely a comforting statement; it is a commissioning promise. Christ’s presence accompanies His people in their mission. Interestingly, the passage notes that “some doubted.” Even in the presence of the risen Lord, there was uncertainty. Yet Jesus does not withdraw His mission or His promise. His presence is not dependent on the perfection of our faith. This is deeply encouraging. We are called to serve Christ not because we are strong or perfect, but because He is with us. The Church today continues this mission. Whether in preaching, teaching, serving, or witnessing, we do so under the assurance that Christ is with us. His presence guides us, empowers us, and sustains us. It gives us courage to step out in faith and to carry the Gospel to the world. To walk in the assurance of the risen Christ is to participate in His mission with confidence, knowing that we do not go alone.
Conclusion
The message of this Sunday is clear and powerful: the risen Christ is with us – always, everywhere, and in every circumstance. From Isaiah, we receive the assurance that His presence strengthens and upholds us. From the Psalm, we are reminded that His presence is that of the reigning Lord. From Hebrews, we learn that His presence is constant and unchanging. From the Gospel, we are commissioned to live and serve in the power of His abiding presence. In a world filled with uncertainty, this promise becomes our anchor. We are not alone. The risen Christ walks with us. As we continue our journey of faith, may we hold firmly to this assurance. May it give us courage in fear, strength in weakness, and hope in despair. Let us not live as though Christ is distant, but as those who know that He is near – closer than we imagine, present in every moment of our lives. And as we go forth into the world, may we carry this assurance within us: “The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid.”
