Rom-8:31-39
John 20: 1 – 18
Key Verse: John 20:16 –
“Jesus said to her, ‘Mary.’ She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, ‘Rabboni!’ (which means Teacher).”
Introduction
Easter morning begins not with celebration but with confusion. Mary Magdalene, a woman who had walked closely with Jesus, comes to the tomb and finds it empty. Her first reaction is not joy but sorrow. Like Mary, many of us in our moments of loss and brokenness struggle to see hope when expectations are shattered. But it is in this very place of confusion that we encounter the risen Christ. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is not a one-time event in history alone; it is a continuous experience of encountering the Risen One on our life’s journey. It transforms our sorrow into joy, fear into courage, and despair into hope. Today, as we reflect on the theme “Encountering the Risen Christ on the Way,” we will explore four powerful movements of Easter, inspired by the selected readings.
-
Restoration Promised – Hosea 14:4-9
The prophet Hosea offers a powerful word from the Lord:
“I will heal their backsliding, I will love them freely: for mine anger is turned away from him” (v. 4). In the Old Testament, Hosea speaks to a people who have wandered far from God. Yet God does not abandon them. He promises restoration, healing, and love. The image of a flourishing Israel like an olive tree or a blossoming lily speaks of new life and growth. This promise of restoration finds its fulfilment in the resurrection. Jesus rises to restore what sin and death had broken. He comes to us not in condemnation, but in compassion. Just as God sought Israel in their waywardness, so too Jesus seeks us in our wandering.
A broken family restored by forgiveness reminds us that resurrection is not only for the end of time but for today. Healing and wholeness begin when we turn toward the voice of the Risen One.

Rejoicing in God’s Faithfulness – Psalm 92
Psalm 92 is a song of praise, a declaration that “It is good to give thanks to the Lord, to sing praises to your name, O Most High.” The psalmist rejoices in the steadfast love of God. He describes the righteous as flourishing like a palm tree and growing like a cedar in Lebanon. Even in old age, they bear fruit. This is the song of the resurrection life: fruitfulness despite barrenness, praise in place of mourning. Easter reminds us that God’s faithfulness is not seasonal; it is eternal. Just as the earth rejoices with the dawn of spring, the soul rejoices in the victory of Christ over death. Like a barren tree blossoming in spring, Easter brings unexpected joy into the winters of our lives. Even when the night seems long, resurrection light breaks through.
-
Reassurance in Suffering – Romans 8:31-39
Paul’s triumphant declaration in Romans lifts our eyes to the unshakable love of God:
“If God is for us, who can be against us?” This passage is not a denial of suffering but a testimony to the sufficiency of God’s grace in the midst of it. Paul acknowledges tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. Yet, in all these things, “we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.” Resurrection is not the absence of struggle but the assurance of God’s abiding presence. The risen Christ meets us in our pain and walks with us. Consider a believer facing terminal illness who still radiates hope. Resurrection power is not about escaping suffering but transcending it with divine courage.

Recognition in the Garden – John 20:1-18
Mary comes to the tomb weeping. Her world has fallen apart. She doesn’t recognize Jesus until He calls her by name:
“Mary!” In that moment, everything changes. The resurrection becomes personal. Jesus knows each of us by name. He meets us in our darkest hour and opens our eyes. We, like Mary, are called to be witnesses of this transforming encounter. The Gospel tells us that Easter is not just an event to celebrate; it is a relationship to experience. Jesus walks with us, speaks to us, and sends us out to proclaim hope. Like a lost child finding her parent by the familiar voice, we come alive when we hear Jesus call our name. The journey from grief to mission begins with recognition.
The Message of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian faith and the ultimate demonstration of God’s power over sin and death. It is not merely an event of the past, but a living reality that transforms the lives of believers even today. The empty tomb proclaims a powerful truth:
Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! What do we learn from this glorious resurrection?
First,
we learn that death is not the end. Jesus’ victory over the grave assures us that eternal life is real and promised to all who believe in Him. The resurrection affirms the hope of life after death and the assurance of our own resurrection.
Second,
we are reminded that God is faithful. Jesus had foretold His resurrection, and God fulfilled that promise. In our journey of faith, even when everything seems dark and hopeless, the resurrection teaches us to trust in God’s timing and power.
Third,
the resurrection brings new life and transformation. Those who encountered the risen Christ – Mary Magdalene, the disciples, and even Thomas – were never the same again. Likewise, when we truly encounter the Risen Lord in our lives, we are renewed in spirit, empowered to live victoriously, and compelled to share the good news with the world.
Lastly,
we are called to walk in resurrection power daily. The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in us (Romans 8:11), enabling us to overcome sin, serve with love, and endure trials with hope. The resurrection of Jesus is not just a past miracle; it is a present power and a future promise. Let us live as Easter people – full of hope, courage, and unwavering faith in our risen Lord.
Conclusion
Easter invites us to walk with the Risen Christ daily. As we encounter Him in Scripture, worship, prayer, and service, we are transformed. Like Mary, we are called by name. Like the righteous in Psalm 92, we are called to flourish. Like Israel in Hosea, we are promised restoration. Like Paul, we are assured that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Let us be Easter people who carry resurrection hope into a world longing for healing and peace.
Prayer
Risen Lord Jesus, We thank You for meeting us on the way, for calling us by name, and for breathing into us the hope of new life. May the joy of Your resurrection fill our hearts, strengthen our faith, and inspire us to be witnesses of Your love. In our moments of doubt, remind us of the empty tomb. In our sorrow, speak our names with compassion. Let us walk with You in the power of the resurrection, now and always. In Your victorious name we pray, Amen.
