Festival of Christ the King

Zech. 2:10-13       Ps.115

Eph. 1:3-10          Lk.1:26-38

Verse for meditation: “He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end” (Lk. 1:32,33).

The subject kingdom of God is an important thought in the Bible, especially in the New Testament. Jesus preached about the kingdom of God. He instructed the apostles to go out and preach about the kingdom of God. Kingdom of God is the life style on the principals of peace, justice, love and mutual sharing. Christ himself is the king of the kingdom of God. In the kingdom of God the hungry is satisfied and the humiliated being lifted up. Thus, we celebrate Jesus Christ, the king of the kingdom of God. In other words, we celebrate the joy of the kingdom of God. Let our personal lives and families and the church become part of the kingdom of God. May this message help you for that.

1. God is king: Celebrate (Zech. 2:10-13)

The idea that “God is king” is found in many places in the Old Testament “Shout and be glad, O Daughter of Zion. For I am coming and I will live among you, declares the Lord” (Zech. 2:10). Zechariah declares these words as the word of God. God is the king in the kingdom of God. In a structure where God is king no evil powers can enter into it. No evil will befall on you (Ps. 91:10) is the promise for those who “live in the shadow of the most high (Ps. 91:1).

2. The election through Christ: Celebrate (Eph. 1:3-10)

The theology of Paul that God has elected his own before the setting of the foundation of the world is explained here. According to God’s will through Jesus Christ, “For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified, he also glorified” (Rom. 8: 29, 30). Parallel idea is found in Eph. 1:3-10 also. It is only through God’s grace that we are worthy to know God and know the will of God through worship and live according to his will. Remembering that grace of God let us thank God and celebrate and worship God.

3. The unending throne of Christ (Lk. 1:26-38)

The Lucan narrative of the birth of Christ says that the angel Gabriel appeared to Mary prior to the Birth of Jesus and prophesied about him. “He will be great and will be called the son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end” (Lk. 1:32,33). This throne of Christ should be formed in us. As we are nearing the days of the advent of Christ (Christmas days), let us prepare our hearts to welcome Christ. Let the unending kingdom (rule) of Christ be born in us. Let the whole world be filled by the blessedness of the revelation of the kingdom of God.

Prayer

Eternal God who called us to be partners in the mission of the kingdom, we ask you to fill our hearts with hope, that in our doubts and despair we would learn to wait upon you discern your will. Help us take risk for the sake of your kingdom and by accepting your way and learn to walk courageously in the paths of righteousness and bear witness to your mighty works, where the hungry are satisfied and the lowly exalted, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and holy Spirit one God, now and ever Amen.

  • Enemies of two families were crossing a narrow way face to face. One said, “I will never give way to the fools”. The other said, “but I will” and gave the way for his enemy to cross first with a smile.
  • A snake came into the meeting site of the youth camp. Boys were shouting at the sight of the snake. The leader said, “All of you keep quite. Take the Bible and read”. A boy read aloud “He came to his own people, but they received him not”.
