Light on the Lamp Stands

Zec. 4:1-14                  Ps. 27

1 Cor. 3:10-15            Matt. 5:14-16

Verse for meditation: “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house” (Matt. 5:14,15)

The church is the light of the world. Therefore, the church is depicted as the lamp stands (Rev. 1:20). God has placed us to give light to the world. There are many Biblical verses which relate God to light (Ps. 106:2; 1Jn. 1:5; James 1:17; 1 Tim. 6:16). Jesus, who revealed God, is the light of the world (Ps. 27:1, Jn. 1:4, 8:12, 1:9, 12:35, 36). Light is the symbol of holiness and purity (Prov. 6:23, Is. 5:20, Rom. 13:12). Spiritual enlightening is also called light (2 Cor. 4:6, Eph. 5:14, 1 Pet. 2:9). The word of God is also compared with light (Ps. 119: 105). The children of God are the sons and daughters of light (Lk. 16:8, Jn. 12:36, 1 Thess. 5:5). In the fight against the powers of darkness we should wear the weapons of light (Rom. 13:12, Eph. 6:12, 1Thess. 5:8). The believers should examine what is pleasing to the Lord and walk in light. Their light should shine in front of others (Matt. 5:16, 10:27; Lk. 8:16, 11:33, 12:3; Acts 13:47).

1. Light from the lamp stand (Zec. 4:1-14)

Zachariah in his vision saw a solid gold lamp stand … seven lights which were shedding light. A vision parallel to this is also reported by the Apostle John (Rev. 1:13, 20). He also gives the meaning of the lamp stands. They mean the church. That is to say that the church should become the lamp that gives light to the world (Phil. 2:15). In this world corruption, crime, and injustice happens as the expression of darkness. At this point the church should become a wick of light to give hope to the people groping in darkness.

2. Light is the Tangible Deeds (Matt. 5:14-16)

As we study this text, the salt of the earth and the light of the world are known as our deeds. A tree is recognized through its fruit. Our deeds enlighten our life, as Jesus stated that men should see our good deeds and glorify the Father who is in heaven. It is meant as light here.

3. Revealing Deeds (1 Cor. 3:10-15).

The works of goodness and love will stand forever. But the deeds of selfishness and evil will be destroyed. The works of each and every one will be evaluated at the end (1 Cor. 3:13). Only a lasting deed will be rewarded.
