Cross: Accomplishment of Salvation

Ex. 14:15-22            Ps. 22

Heb. 13:8-17           Jn. 19:23-30

Verse for meditation: “When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ‘It is finished’. With that, that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit” (Jn. 19:30).

Cross is the symbol of salvation. Paul says that the words of the cross is a divine strength  for those who are saved (1 Cor. 1:18). The New Testament Greek uses the following words in relation to salvation: sodzo (save, deliver), soter (savior, deliverer) and soteria (salvation), soterios and soterion (adjective forms). The neuter gender form of the noun soterion has been used in the place of Christ (Lk. 2:31, 3:6). Soteria is used in different senses: deliverance as personal (Acts. 27:34; Phil. 1:19; Heb. 11:7) and national (Lk. 1:69-71, Acts. 7:25), Christ the author of salvation (Lk. 2:31, Jn. 4:22), different aspects of salvation (Phil. 2:12, 1 Pet. 1:9, Rom. 13:11, 1 Thes. 5:8-10) and all the blessing that God gives through the Holy Spirit (2 Cor. 6:2, Heb. 5:9, 1 Pet. 1:9,10, Jud. 3). The word sodzo and its related words are used 483 times in the Septuagint. The word sodzo is used mainly to mean Hebrew words like Yasha (278 times), shalom (68 times) and tselem (55 times). This word means to free, deliver, save and untie. Salvation is a gift from God (Eph. 2:5). This is received through the grace of God.

Good Friday is observed on the day in which God has submitted his son Jesus for the death on the cross as a means of redemption to humanity. The revelation of love, forgiveness and self denial are viewed at the cross. Cross was a stumbling block for the Jews and to the wise Greek (non Jewish) it was foolishness. But it became the symbol of divine wisdom (1 Cor. 1:18, 23, 24). The cross was the synonym of contempt, lowliness and curse (Deut. 21:23, Gal. 3:13). Jesus endured the cross scorning its shame (Heb. 12:2). He endured sufferings until he died on the cross (Phil. 2:8). The death of Jesus was not a murder. Moreover it was not martyrdom or suicide or accidental death or a natural death. But it was the sacrifice of his only beloved son as prepared by God. Through the death of Jesus ‘death had happened to death’. The wages of sin is death (Rom.6: 23). Christ has borne this death on the cross. It is proved that death is not the end. Jesus defeated death and offered a life beyond death to those who believe in him (Rom. 5:12-21).

1. Deliverance from Egypt (Ex. 14:15-22).

Just like the people of Israel were delivered from bondage of Egypt, through Jesus Christ we receive deliverance from all powers of the evil. They followed Moses but today we follow the living rock, Jesus (1 Cor. 10:1-5). The believer experiences the salvation that is accomplished and fulfilled on the cross as he starts to follow Jesus.

2. The perfection that is given at the sacrifice of Jesus (Heb. 13:8-17)

The death of Jesus was not a suicide. It was not an natural or unnatural death. The death of Jesus was not a murder. It was not an accident. The death of Jesus was foreseen and prepared by God. Through this sacrifice, man could experience perfect salvation. To sanctify the people with his own blood Jesus suffered outside the gate (Heb. 12:12).

3.  The Accomplishment given by the Cross   (Jn. 19:23-30)

The act of accomplishing everything perfectly is viewed at the cross (Jn.19:30). Jesus has perfectly finished a multi dimentional ministry on the cross – the law, sin, evil powers and the scripture. Therefore Jesus is believed to be the fulfillment of the divine revelation.
