Rereading the Scripture with the Risen Lord

2 Chro.34:29-33   Ps. 19: 7-14

Acts 8:26-40           Lk. 24:13-27

Verse for meditation: “And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the scriptures concerning himself” (Lk. 24:27).

Jesus who appeared to disciples going from Jerusalem to Emmaus speaks about the scriptures. He has explained about himself from the scriptures starting from Moses as found in all other prophets. In the same way in another instance when he appeared to the disciples opened their insight as found in the law of Moses, in the prophetical books and in the Psalms (Lk. 24:44,45). In today’s context also a rereading of the scripture is being necessitated. Research methodologists suggest seven points in a scientific rereading of the scripture. In English it is called ‘Seven Rs’. They are read, reread, reflect, relate, refer, reasoning and record. When we read the word of God also following this sequence is always appreciable. This method will help us to identify the spirit behind the letters. The letter kills but the Spirit gives life. As we study methodology as well as read the text in its context. In the interpretation of the word of God a re - reading is necessary to listen to Jesus who is unchanging and eternal and identify Jesus as he speaks to us in different ways.

1. Transformation through Rereading of the Scripture (2 Chr. 34:29-33).

Josiah became king of Judah at the age of eight. At the 18th year of his reign as the maintenance works of the temple of the Lord is being done, they found out the book of the law. They submitted the document into the hands of the king. Shaphan, the king’s secretary read it to the king. On hearing the law the king tore his garments. Following this incident he inspired the people of the whole country to repent and turn towards God. Reading and re - reading of the scripture lead the people for transformation.

2. The Christology understood in the rereading of the scripture (Lk. 24:13-27)

As said earlier when Cleopa and another person travelled from Jerusalem to Emmaus the resurrected Christ also walked along with them. Though they did not identify him in the beginning, at the end they recognized him as Jesus Christ. Jesus interpreted the scriptures to them. As they reached near the village to which they are to go Jesus pretended to be walking ahead of them. Their request at this point is note worthy, “… Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over …” (Lk. 29).

3.  Strong faith given through the rereading of the scripture   (Acts 8: 26 - 40)

The transgender official of the Ethiopian queen came to Jerusalem to worship. While returning he was reading the book of Isaiah. Philip explained the meaning of the words that he was reading. This official received a transformation. The rereading of the scripture has brought this person to transformation and thereby to the faith in Jesus Christ.
