One of the important teachings of Christian life is to be ‘lead by the Holy Spirit’. He who obeys the spirit of God is a spiritual man. God has promised men the Holy Spirit who is one among the Trinity. The Almighty God interferes with men as Father, the incarnated Son of God, the Messiah and the Holy Spirit. From the Old Testament time itself the promise of the Holy Spirit has been given to humanity (Is. 11:1, 28:2; Joel. 2:28). The Holy Spirit sent only to the kings, prophets and priests who where elected by God has been promised to be shared to all flesh in the last days. On the 50th day after the festival of Pessaha, the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit evidently started working. This day may be called the day of inauguration of the Christian community. The church has been constituted. Thus the work of the Holy Spirit has begun explicitly in the Christian church (Acts. 12:1-10, 8:14-17, 10: 44-48, 19:1-6). Following this the apostles gave instructions towards the ministry and order of services in the church. This helped to understand the work of the Holy Spirit more clearly and make use of it (1 Cor. Chapters 12, 14). The promise of the Holy Spirit has been often misunderstood as given to certain people or church groups. But Jesus had the opinion about this as follows, “The wind blows where ever it wants” (Jn.3:8). Peter also says that God has fulfilled his promise without any partiality (Acts 10:34). The promise that was given through the prophets in the Old Testament and through Jesus Christ in the New Testament has begun on the day of Pentecost and continues given today. In Luke 11:13, Jesus said, “If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”. Jesus is calling all those who are thirsty. This is seen as a call to live in the fullness of the Holy Spirit (Jn. 7:37,38). The repeated sayings of Jesus about the Holy Spirit who is to be send in future is also note worthy (Jn. 14:15-21, 16:8-13).
1. The Holy Spirit that leads for work (Ex. 36:1-7).
God commanded Moses to construct the tent of meeting. God selected Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur for this purpose. God has appointed Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, to help him (Ex. 31:1-6). God has filled them with the Holy Spirit, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts (Ex. 31:3). As the work has been inspired by the Holy Spirit, people gave much for the work even beyond what is needed. The ministry of giving went to the extent, they announced ‘bring no more’ (Ex. 36:5-7). This indicates that when a ministry is lead by the Holy Spirit all needs are supplied.
2. The spirit of Sonship (Rom. 8:12-17)
As indicated earlier, a Christian Spiritual life is a life lead by the Holy Spirit. If one obeys the flesh and lives, surely he will die. St. Paul taught that if we will kill the works of the body with the spirit then we will live (Rom. 8:13). If we are children with the same spirit we are heirs also. Thus we should attain a life lead by the Holy Spirit.
3. The Spirit that leads day by day (Jn. 14:25-35)
The benediction given to the church is as follows, “May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all” (2Cor. 13:14). The Bible uses the word fellowship about 22 times. The Malayalam word Koottaima (Fellowship) comes from the Greek word Koinoneyo. The New Testament uses this word in 19 places. The status of being together is fellowship. The verb of koinonia is used eight times in the New Testament. To translate into Malayalam different words are used – ‘to give the share’ (Gal. 6:6), to become share holder (1 Timo. 5:22), to become partakers (1 Pet. 4:13), give fellowship (Rom. 12:13,; Phil. 4:15), to become friend (Rom. 15:27; 2 Jn. 11). Koinoneyo indicates taking partnership in any matter. We have seen the meaning of this word such as ‘become part of it’, ‘observe fellowship’ and ‘become partner’. Holy Spirit is a person of the trinity, not simply a power. That is to say a powerful person. This promise is the constant presence of God who is the Holy Spirit. The promise is that he will be with us till the end of ages. Jesus has given the promise that he will give us the Holy Spirit to be with us always (Jn. 14:16,26; 18:6-13). God gives us fellowship today as the Holy Spirit, as Immanuel in the New Testament (Matt. 1:22) and as Jehovah Shamma in the Old Testament (Ez. 48:35).
