Believing in Christ: The Truth

Ex. 34:1-9           Ps. 119:89-96

Eph. 4:7-16           Jn. 17:6-19

Verse for meditation: “Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth” (Jn. 17:17).

Jesus Christ is truth (Jn. 14:6). The word of Jesus is also truth (Jn.17:17). To walk in the way of the Lord means to walk in truth. The prayer of the Psalmist is also this, “Teach me your way, O Lord., and I will walk in your truth” (Ps. 86:11). “I have chosen the way of truth” (Ps. 119:30). God himself is truth. The Upanishad says: Bhagat satyam Jegath Midhya (God is truth the world is illusion).  God alone is truth. Chanthogyo Upanishad categorizes the word ‘truth’ (sathyam) into syllables and gives definite meaning to each syllable.

Thani ha va ethane thrinee aksharani

‘Satheeyam’ ithi thad yad sat thadamritham;

Adha yad ‘thi’ thadmarthyam,

Adha yad ‘yam’ thena uphe yachathi,

Thasmath yam aharaharva evam vith swargam lokamethi

Sathyam (truth) has three syllables ‘sa’, ‘thee’ and ‘yam’. Of these Sath is immortal. ‘Thee’ is death. ‘Yam’ joints both. Therefore to know the yam every day we attain immortality. In short truth is understood as the divine plan of salvation.

Irgvedha 1.164.46 says “Ekam sath vipra behuda vadhanthi”. That is, the truth is one but the scholars explain it in different ways. God is truth.

‘Sa’ is immortal, ‘tha’ mortal. Yam connects both (8:3, 5). In the Hebrew language the word for truth is ‘A-meth’. It has three syllables – Aleph, Mem and Taw. They represent the first, middle and the last syllables of the Hebrew alphabet. That is, he who was, is now and who will be (Is. 44:6, 41:4; Ex. 3:14). Because God is truth (Rom. 3:4), the words of God also true (Jn. 17:17; Ps. 19:9, 119:160; Dan.8:26, 10:1, 21). Jesus told Pilot that he has come to bear witness to this truth (Jn. 18:37). Jesus said, “… If you hold to my teachings, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (Jn. 8:31, 32). The word truth   stands as a synonym for God.

1. Become in Christ who is truth (Jn. 17:6-19).

‘To become in Christ’ was an important teaching of Jesus – if anyone is in me and I in him (Jn 15:15). In the priestly prayer of Jesus also, he gives a call to become in Christ, who is the truth. This is the first step of Christian spirituality.

2.    Stand firm in the word of God which his truth (Ps. 119:89-96; Ex. 34:1-9)

Stand steadfast in the word of God, the truth. This is the second step in the Christian life. The word of God is permanent in heaven (Ps. 119:89). God gave his word to Moses (Ex. 34:1-9). Moses gave that to the people. We should be nurtured through the word of God. It is like the foundation that has been dug deeper and laid upon the rock (Lk. 6:48).

3.  Grow in Christ   (Eph. 4:7-16)

In Christian life there is an experience of growth – growing up to the head of Christ (Eph. 4:15). In the Christian life growth is inevitable (Gal. 4:1; Heb. 5:11-14). To grow in Christ who is the truth, God has given different ministries – apostles, prophets, evangelists, teachers and shepherds (Eph. 4:11).Thus, in the fellowship of the church, we should grow continuously in the love of Christ.
